WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Growing up in Woodlands Extension, I spent my childhood and early twenties surrounded by the beautiful game. Our neighborhood roads, with their closed ends, became our home grounds, training grounds, and even hosted finals. Each road had its own team, and we’d spend our days, weekends, and holidays competing against other neighborhoods to prove we were the best
The Unrivaled Benefits Of Street Football
As I began my coaching career, I realized that the fundamentals of football – first touch, shooting, passing, dribbling, and more – are honed through small-sided games. Street football, or “street soccer,” was more than just a game; it was a training ground that bred talented players.
The Decline Of Street Football
In recent years, I’ve noticed a decline in street football. Children are spending more time indoors, engrossed in video games, TV, and the internet. As a result, they’re missing out on the essential skills developed through small-sided games. The “Joga Bonita” – the beautiful game – is losing its magic.
Revitalizing Street Football
To produce more skilled players, we need to intentionally incorporate sports into school programs. Not just physical education, but actual tournaments and leagues. By merging sports and education, we can create a new generation of educated, talented athletes – just like in developed countries.
Breaking The Dilemma
For too long, children have been forced to choose between football and school. Coaches and parents alike have echoed this dilemma. However, by integrating sports into education, we can provide children with the best of both worlds.
Conclusion
Street football may be a thing of the past, but its benefits are timeless. As coaches, parents, and educators, it’s our responsibility to revive the spirit of street football and provide children with the opportunities they deserve. Let’s work together to create a brighter future for our young athletes.
